Sasha Meets Russia: Flavors of the East – Suzdal
An American blogger, Sasha, comes to Suzdal for a rather unusual festival – Cucumber Day. Held every July during the harvest season, the event offers all sorts of cucumber treats, from fresh and lightly salted cucumbers with herbs to the more adventurous cucumber ice cream. Sasha also stops by a restaurant, aptly named ‘Cucumber’. The menu features some surprising combinations – pickled cucumbers with honey, cucumber-filled dumplings, and even lattes made with cucumber juice.
At a local bakery, Sasha tries her hand at making the traditional Suzdal pretzel. This distinctive bread was originally baked in monasteries, and its shape is meant to symbolize hands clasped in prayer. It’s a popular souvenir for visitors to take home from Suzdal. Beyond the festival, Sasha immerses herself in the history and customs of this ancient town. She takes a stroll along the old earthen rampart, where the wooden Suzdal Kremlin stood in the 12th century, and even dresses in traditional clothing for a colorful photoshoot, capturing the true spirit of Russia.
